The Good Beer Co is Australia’s first social enterprise beer company. Put simply, that means they work with craft brewers to brew and sell beer that raises money for a variety of different and worthy causes. Their first beer, Great Barrier Beer, is brewed by Queensland craft brewery Bargara Brewing Company and raises money for the Australian Marine Conservation Society and their work to protect the Great Barrier Reef. At least 50 percent of the profits from The Good Beer Co go directly to its charity partners.
The Good Beer Co. was launched by Hawthorne local James Grugeon at The Triffid in Newstead in November 2015. Since then it has crowd-funded its first batch of Great Barrier Beer and is already brewing a second, following a great reception and orders from pubs, bars and bottle shops. As a former charity CEO, James says he knows how hard it is to generate funds for good causes and to raise the profile of important issues like protecting the reef. He’s working to secure long-term partnerships with big retailers and distributors that will make it easy for all Australians to have a good beer and do some good for society at the same time.
With the Great Barrier Reef under serious threat from coral bleaching, climate change and, according to recent polling from James Cook University, over 89 percent of Australians saying they see the national icon as part of their identity, there couldn’t be a better time to have a cold one for the reef.
